Our goal was to envoke a unsetteling feeling in the user. This project is a mechanical creature, hiding itself inside a shoebox, only showing its legs. You can mainly feel its presence in the form of mechanical clicking and scraping sounds. If you interact with the creature in any kind of way, it hides itself away and lets out distressed sounds.

the tech

How does it work?

The creature in a box uses an Arduino to control all the peripherals. This includes an IMU and photocell as inputs and DC/vibration/servo motors and LEDs as outputs. The inputs are used to determine the sequence that the program is in. There are five sequences: bright silent, bright loud, initial darkness, creature emerging, and distressed. When it’s bright it will switch between silent and loud continuously. When it’s dark it will wait for a bit and then emerge. If movement is detected it will be distressed and make loud sounds. The sounds are created using the DC and vibration motors.
