The project scrutinizes the idea of joy and pleasure in our culture. JOYstick is a MIDI sound controller device which enables a user to interact with a range of ‘pleasurable’ sounds. Prepared as a sound game experience, the device includes both masculine and feminine sexual features, and aims to identify the taboo behind sensual gratification in our culture.

the tech

How does it work?

The project adapts an old USB joystick which is then connected to send a range of signals to Max 8 from various buttons/sensors. The device becomes a MIDI controller which triggers a range of sounds in Ableton Live 11. The sounds and functions are mapped to also control the gain, distortion, and delay of each sound sample.
