Born from thunder sheets, plate reverb and feedback loops (through a contact microphone and exciter speaker ), _UNDERSCORE creates a sensitive and intimate relationship to materials and resonances. At the heart of it, permitting a fruitful appeasement of the feedback, a daisy board with custom effects connected to hidden yet instinctive knobs; opening to a wide universe of unexplored dronescape.

the tech

How does it work?

The tops sheets are cut in different materials : zinc, steel, expanded cardboard, wood, plexiglass. They're attached with magnets when needed to a veneered resonance board. Each sheet has a unique resonant sound. Attached to it are a contact microphone and exciter speaker looping through a sound card and the daisy seed for effects, then finally in a small amp for the exciter. No additional speakers, the sound is both created and emitted from the sheet. A custom Arduino code controls each of the 8 knobs, with Delay, Compressor, Filter and chorus like effects. The output from the daisy is sent to a computer with a touch designer to control the live Particle Cloud in the background, inspired from cymatics and Chladni sand research.
