A desk toy suitable for children and people who just want something fun to play with. Using max software, this toy synthesises vowels to mimic speech. Parameters of the synthesis is dependent on the angle of the robot and distance from an object. A weight is placed at the bottom to prop the toy up. This toy is also affected by the light in the room, which adds darker textures to the synthesis when in a dark space and vice-versa.

the tech

How does it work?

Created in MAX MSP and features an oscillator, and various formant filters to create vowel sounds. The X axis on the gyroscope controls the pitch of the oscillator while the y axis controls the shape of the formant used, creating a dynamic "speech" pattern when the robot sways from side to side. The light sensor controls a low pass filter and the distance sensor controls the rate at which the robot vocalises.
